Customers of O2 hoping for an upgrade to Nokia's new 41-megapixel camera phone, the 808 PureView, are out of luck: O2 has decided not to offer the handset in the UK.
A spokesperson for O2 confirmed the decision to Wired.co.uk today, although didn't cite specific reasons for it. T-Mobile, Orange and Vodafone have also informed us that they have no plans to offer the phone either. Three could not confirm whether it would or would not offer the phone.

Wired.co.uk has been led to believe by a source close to O2 that it was not the PureView's camera that disappointed the network, but Symbian, its outdated operating system.
Symbian has sorely lacked the innovations and features of its rivals in recent years, despite once being the darling of the mobile OS world -- Nokia even ditched the platform from its smartphones in 2012 in favour of Microsoft's Windows Phone OS.
The PureView appears to be a casualty left on the battlefield during this transition. In our testing thus far, its camera functionality is proving to be a commendable bit of innovation from Nokia, but it's struggling to excite networks from beneath the burden of the handset's last-generation software platform.
O2 explained that it is "continuing to work with Nokia on future products", however, and it's highly likely the camera in the PureView will surface in a future Windows Phone device.
The 808 PureView will still be available SIM-free, meaning O2 and T-Mobile customers can put their current SIM cards into the device, but may need to put up £500 for the privilege.
Nokia reported a loss of 1.3 billion euros (about £1 billion) in its Q1 2012 financial report. This was partly the result of a 52 percent decline in sales of its smartphones compared to Q1 2011.

Vintage 1929 Bentley becomes the most expensive British-made car ever sold after going for £5million at auction

A vintage Bentley has sold for a record-breaking £5million making it the most expensive British-made car ever sold at auction.
The legendary 1929 Bentley was sold for a staggering £5,042,000 at the Goodwood Festival of Speed today smashing the previous British-car record of £3.5 million paid in 2007 for a 1904 Rolls-Royce.
Auction house Bonhams would not confirm the identity of the buyer, who was bidding for the Bentley over the phone.

The bright red Bentley was once owned and raced by Sir Henry 'Tiger Tim' Birkin who set a lap record in the car at the iconic Brooklands Outer Circuit in 1931 when it hit a staggering 137mph.

Birkin was one of the most famous of the Bentley Boys - a group of wealthy men who raced the British sports cars in the 1920s and 30s.
His life was tragically cut short in 1933 in a freak accident after he burned himself on an exhaust pipe during a race. The burn became infected and he died from septicaemia at the age of 36.
His iconic Bentley was later bought by the groundbreaking horologist George Daniels, who owned it until his death last year.

The car, known as a Bentley Blower, was fitted with a 4.5-litre supercharged engine which developed 240bhp. Just 54 were built, with the sports cars capable of accelerating from 0-60mph in just 8 seconds.
Classic car enthusiast Daniels loved the Bentley, once writing that 'for all its inconvenience it is a most exhilarating car to drive both on the road and track'.
Malcolm Barber, Bonhams chief executive officer and auctioneer at the Daniels sale, said: 'The prices achieved for George Daniels’s cars today are a fitting tribute to one of the truly great artist engineers of the 20th Century.
'George was not only a fantastic craftsman who hand-made some of the world’s most desirable watches, he was also a car connoisseur held in immense respect throughout the vintage motoring world.'
Doug Nye, a car historian, added: 'It is wonderful to see this iconic car’s true value recognised by the world market.
'The Birkin single-seater Bentley was, in effect, the Concorde of its time, the fastest car around the high Brooklands bankings.
'It was driven by a great British hero in Sir Henry Birkin and was the most glamorous racing car of the era.'

'Fifty Shades Of Grey' Writer Making $1.35 Million, Every Week

E.L James' erotic novel 'Fifty Shades of Grey' based on Stephanie Meyer's 'Twilight' saga is earning her $1.35 million per week. The book, dubbed by the media as 'mummy porn', has now reached sales of 1 million a week breaking book sales records in 37 different countries. The total sales has now reached 20 million worldwide; an incredible feat after only being published since April in the US. Sales have even overtaken Jk Rowling's 'Harry Potter' series.
Stephenie Meyer picture
The book was originally an online fan fiction story under a different name based on the 'Twilight' series. The novel had to be taken down from the fan site due to its sexual (understatement) nature but James republished it on her website. It is about a college graduate, Anastasia Steele, who falls for the mysterious billionaire Christian Grey. She soon finds out that his history of child abuse has made him a sexual deviant in adulthood, enjoying indulging in such fetishes as sadomasochism and bondage. Two further sequels were published entitled 'Fifty Shades Darker' and 'Fifty Shades Freed'.
According to Celebritynetworth.com, "It's safe to assume that EL James has long ago sold enough copies to repay her seven figure book advance, which means at this point she is earning the standard 7 per cent royalty on every $14 paperback and 25 per cent royalty on every $10 eBook". Universal/Focus Features have also paid $5 million for the film rights to the trilogy. Popular romance author Jilly Cooper is pleased with the book sales. "I am delighted that it's giving a new lease of life to the genre", she says. 'Porn was terribly out of fashion before that book came out". She does, however, admit that she has heard the book has been 'poorly written'

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes divorcing after five years of marriage

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes have sensationally revealed they are divorcing after five years of marriage.
The Hollywood superstar, 49, said he was ‘deeply saddened’ that his younger wife, 33, had filed for a separation.
He revealed the former Dawson's Creek actress had initiated the split, bringing a dramatic end to one of Hollywood's most high-profile romances.
In a surprise move, Katie is understood to have filed for sole custody of the couple's daughter Suri, six.

'This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family,' Holmes's lawyer Jonathan Wolfe said in a statement to People magazine.
'Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest.'
A spokesperson for Tom, who is currently in Iceland filming his new sci-fi movie Oblivion, said: 'Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children.'
The actress filed documents in New York this week citing 'irreconcilable differences'.
She has asked for legal custody, primary residential custody and a 'suitable amount' of child support from her husband, TMZ reports.

In addition she has asked for the division of their property, although no mention of their pre-nuptial agreement is mentioned in the documents. The couple are worth around $275 million - much of that owing to Tom's box office success.
Tom is believed to have 'not seen' the divorce coming.
But sources insist that she did tell her husband of five-and-a-half years that she was filing for divorce – but she didn’t give him a chance to control the spread of the news, as he did with Nicole Kidman.
The fact that she issued a solo statement speaks of some heat around the final extinguishing of the marriage.
The pair have not been seen together in public for almost three months - they were pictured on April 5 while in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Miss Holmes failed to turn up to at any of the worldwide premieres of her husband’s latest film Rock of Ages, despite Cruise’s constant protestations of love for his wife.
The final arguments seem to have been over where Cruise was going to spend his 50th birthday on Tuesday.
He told her that he was planning to be on the set of his latest film Oblivion in Iceland and that seems to have been the last straw for her.
The statuesque brunette had frequently been pictured looking drawn and exhausted during her marriage. One Hollywood source said she had been ‘utterly miserable with Tom for months, if not years’.
Indeed, the row over his birthday followed another bust-up over what Miss Holmes felt were embarrassingly bad taste pictures of him on the cover of W magazine last month.
He was dressed – or rather undressed – as the rock star Stacee Jaxx, the character he plays in Rock of Ages. Two half dressed blondes were wrapped around him, one licking his face.
Miss Holmes, a nice girl from Ohio who is nevertheless very aware of why Cruise feels the need to play the macho card in public, was apparently ‘speechless’ with disgust and felt the pictures laid both of them open to ridicule.

Miss Holmes has chosen to stay with Suri in Cruise’s New York apartment while he has travelled the world working.
The little girl has been her constant and only companion. They are often out together until late at night, and Miss Holmes – who gave up all the threads of her old life to become Mrs Tom Cruise – seems to have no other friends at all.
One Hollywood source told said today: ‘It was an open secret that she was utterly miserable with Tom, and had been for months if not years. They really couldn’t drag out the pretence any longer.’
When Cruise was filming Rock of Ages in Miami, Miss Holmes came along with Suri and they made a family holiday of it. But since then they have spent no more than a handful of nights under the same roof.
Miss Holmes, who used to have a poster of Cruise on her bedroom wall, found that being married to an intense, workaholic, and deeply religious megastar was no picnic.
In pictures of her going about her daily business she looked completely worn out. Her brown hair was prematurely grey, she never wore make up. One shapeless cardigan was succeeded by another baggy jumper.
No sign of trouble: The couple were last pictured together in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on April 5

Meanwhile, those close to her said that she felt he wasn’t putting any effort into her or the marriage.
She found herself raising Suri effectively as a single mother. Her once promising film career – she had been the love interest in Batman Begins – had been completely stifled. Roles evaporated. She ended up trying to find work as a fashion designer, endorsing the line Holmes and Yang.
She missed all the premieres for Rock of Ages – officially she was said to need to attend a skating tournament in Asia, which seems bizarre to say the least.
The bigger picture is that this is the end of the third of Tom Cruise’s marriages and a spectacular failure of his strategy to relaunch himself as a ‘regular guy’.
The couple’s2006 Italian wedding was choreographed like a massive movie premiere, with more bodyguards than guests and the ultimate goal seemingly the fantastically romantic images which were released to the media of the A list star and his pretty bride.
Dream wedding: The pair married in an Italian castle in 2006

This came in the wake of the president of Paramount Sumner Redstone complaining that women found the actor ‘creepy.’
When the romance began – Katie had met Tom to discuss the possibility of appearing in Mission Impossible III – she was immediately sent on an intensive and lengthy study course about the religion founded by sci-fi author L Ron Hubbard in 1954, which holds that humans are descended from an exiled race of aliens called Thetans.
She was ‘audited’ by Scientology counsellors, and unlike Penelope Cruz and Nicole Kidman before her, has totally embraced the movement.
Despite earlier reports that there would be a Roman Catholic ceremony of some sort – Katie was born a Catholic, and her parents and family remain of that faith – it was a Scientology wedding.
What’s more it was conducted by David Miscavige, Tom Cruise’s very best friend who is the head of the movement.
And if the union was supposed to cease gossip about Scientologist Cruise and her personal life, in particular rumours of his homosexuality – always denied – it failed utterly.
For some time – indeed pretty much since they returned from their fabulously opulent wedding in Italy – Katie has looked unhappy.
Gossip suggesting that she wanted to leave the marriage was always denied by Cruise’s people. But over the past few weeks, the briefings have become more insistent.
Friends say Katie was deeply unhappy, and felt betrayed over his continuous globetrotting.

‘Katie spent her time avoiding him, and they rowed terribly,’ one Hollywood source claimed.
From the outset she struggled to ever settle in the menage in Los Angeles, where Cruise lived with his sister and her family and her mother as well.
Katie never felt that the massive mansion, stuffed with bodyguards, was her home. Everyone who came through the doors was a Scientologist.
He asked for a pre-nuptial to be put into place, but obviously that mostly protects Tom Cruise rather than Katie Holmes. Their joint worth stands at around £180million.
Katie will no doubt get enough to keep Suri in her favoured Ferragamo bags.
Who knows, now that Katie has walked away from Tom perhaps the little girl will be allowed to go to a regular school, rather than being home schooled and taken out on the town until midnight.
The world which Katie and Suri have lived in has been one of great luxury but also great isolation.
The Cruise family lives in a £20 million house with 13,000 square feet of space. Cass Mapother is a key figure here, Tom’s sister – and her three sons share the house with Tom and his two adopted children Conor and Isabella.
All the children have been raised as Scientologists.
Cruise’s devotion to the cause is great – as was shown in an embarrassing leaked clip in 2008 when he ranted: ‘I have to tell you something, it is rough and tumble, and it’s wild and woolly, and it’s a blast, it’s a blast, it really is fun because, dammit, there is nothing better than going out there and fighting the fight and suddenly you see things are better.
‘I do what I can, and I do it the way I do everything. There’s nothing part of the way for me.’
His devotion to the cause meant that he was widely regarded as ‘weird’. The Andrew Morton book repeated claims that Suri was thought by some to have been conceived using the frozen sperm of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard.
After he split from Nicole Kidman in 2000, he endured much of the same king of gossip. Some of it was squashed by his romance with Penelope Cruz, and that was followed by dates with the voluptuous Sofia Vergara.
You wonder, though, if he will be all the more damaged still by what has happened to Katie Holmes.
Before they met she was a natural beauty, with a dewy complexion and pink cheeks. They both looked ecstatic when he proposed at the Eiffel Tower. At the time she was so young and naïve that she preferred cherry coke to champagne and had barely been out of America before.
Her physical decline in the five and a half years that followed is almost shockingly obvious.
Cruise proposed on June 17, 2005 on the top of the Eiffel Tower following a famously embarrassing declaration of his love on Oprah Winfrey’s show, where he jumped up on the couch yelling ‘I’m in love, I’m in love, I can’t be cool, I can’t be laid back.’
Cruise’s first wife was actress Mimi Rogers, 56, whom he married in 1987 before they divorced only three years later in 1990.
He then married Moulin Rouge star Nicole Kidman, 45, later that year, and they adopted two children in Isabella, now 19, and Connor, now 17, but divorced in 2001.
Katie was previously engaged to American Pie star Chris Klein.

Digital camera sales slump as people use smartphones to take snaps

Althought the digital camera market was still worth £598 million in 2011, this is down by nearly a third from 2006, when it was worth £843 million.
Eight per cent of UK adults, or three million consumers, now say they are unlikely to replace their camera when it breaks, instead relying on their phones.
By 2016 the market is expected to be worth £523 million, reports Mintel.
Camcorders have shown a similar drop, falling by 21 per cent in the same time frame, from £354 million to £279 million.
Mintel Technology Analyst Samuel Gee said: "Although smartphone cameras do not typically match the quality of output of dedicated devices, the technology is consistently improving, as the quality of camera image output becomes too high for consumers to reliably distinguish between competitors.
Smartphone owners are now ditching digital cameras for pictures
"Dedicated device manufacturers investing in digital services and including social connectivity and image-editing features in upcoming devices will remain a more enticing proposition in the face of gently growing opposition."
Figures show that 80 per cent of us use a digital camera or camcorder, with 40 per cent relying on them exclusively.
This compares to the 45 per cent who use their smartphone.
The traditional film camera is used by jut eight per cent of Brits.
Four in ten (39%) camera owners purchased a camera to replace their old one.
Around a third (34%) of consumers purchased a camera for their holiday (34%) while almost one in five (18%) purchased a camera to record a specific event.
Althoug 21% of all camera and camcorder owners agree that smartphones are a better long term investment, seven in ten (71%) strongly agree that the quality of photos is better on a digital camera or camcorder than a smartphone.

Euro 2012: Mario Balotelli calls Italy's semi-final victory over Germany 'the best game of my life'

Balotelli's double was enough to see Italy through to a meeting with holders Spain in Kiev.
It extended Italy's remarkable record against Germany in competitive combat, the 2-1 win meaning two of Europe's true giants have now clashed on eight occasions and the Azzurri have never lost.
"With Spain we are the two best teams in the tournament," said Balotelli. "Can we win? I'll tell you on Sunday."
At the final whistle, Balotelli embraced his adopted mother Silvia, who brought him up from the age of two after he was born in Italy to Ghanaian immigrants.

Fifty Shades Of Grey hits 1m sales record

The erotic tale, the first in a trilogy by EL James, reached seven-figure sales in only 11 weeks. It hit the target 25 weeks faster than the previous record-holder, Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code.
And the book has shattered the seven-day sales record for an adult paperback which it set only last week - by selling almost twice as many copies.
Fifty Shades shifted 397,889 paperbacks in a week, bettering the 205,130 it established just a few days earlier.
50ShadesofGreyCoverArt.jpg
But both of James's follow-up titles also bettered that figure, according to the latest figures from Nielsen BookScan which compiles book industry data.
Fifty Shades Darker sold 245,801 while Fifty Shades Freed sold 212,832.
Until this month, the adult paperback record was another of those held by The Da Vinci Code with a one-week sale of 141,156 copies.
Fifty Shades has also beaten the one-week sale of JK Rowling's children's book The Tales Of Beedle The Bard, which rang up 367,625 sales when it was released in 2008.
It gives the book a new record for the biggest weekly tally for a paperback in the UK.
Sales have been similarly huge for digital copies of the books. Earlier this week Amazon announced that Fifty Shades has become the first title to sell more than one million copies for its Kindle device.
Industry magazine The Bookseller has reported that physical sales of James's books totalled £3.9 million last week, and her three titles outsold the rest of the entire top 50 bestsellers by more than two to one.
Despite the colossal sales so far, Fifty Shades is still some way off the overall weekly UK sales records. One of Rowling's Harry Potter titles sold 1.8 million hardback copies in a week, and Brown's The Lost Symbol is the top-selling adult book, with almost 551,000 copies, again in hardback.
Mother-of-two James - whose real name is Erika Leonard - has already sold the film rights to Fifty Shades Of Grey, which began as an online tale.
Her books follow the erotic adventures of a young graduate and her submissive relationship with a handsome billionaire.

Beckham stunned after being left out of Team GB Olympic squad as Pearce chooses Richards, Giggs and Bellamy

David Beckham is stunned after being left out of the Great Britain Olympic football squad by Stuart Pearce.
The former England captain seemed to be certain to be part of the summer event but Micah Richards, Craig Bellamy and Ryan Giggs have been picked as the over-23 players in the 18-man squad.
Pearce called Beckham on Wednesday night to inform him of the decision, explaining that he had enough cover for midfield and he wanted to add experience to his defence.

The 37-year-old superstar, who currently plies his trade for MLS side LA Galaxy, played a massive role in Britain securing the games in 2005 and has stayed involved in a huge capacity since.
Beckham said on Thursday: 'Everyone knows how much playing for my country has always meant to me. So I would have been honoured to have been part of this unique Team GB squad.'
He added: 'Naturally I am very disappointed, but there will be no bigger supporter of the team than me. And like everyone, I will be hoping they can win the gold.
'As a Londoner, I will have been really proud to have played a small part in bringing the Olympics to my home town as part of Seb's [Coe] team, and I can't wait for the games to begin and enjoy every moment along with the rest of Great Britain.'
Beckham was included in Pearce's 35-man shortlist for the Games but has not made the final cut.

Beckham's relentless efforts on the Olympic front make his exclusion all the more surprising.
He accompanied the Olympic Flame from Athens to British soil and carried it in Cornwall after it was lit.
Beckham also took part in the closing ceremony at the 2008 Beijing Olympics as part of the London 2012 team, as he racked up the air miles.
He flew from his club in Los Angeles to London to play for England in a friendly against the Czech Republic, before then making it to Beijing for the show and then back to LA for training.
The British Olympic Association will also be surprised by the decision to leave Beckham out.

But BOA chief Andy Hunt had previously stated Pearce has free reign to do as he pleases with the squad.
He said: 'Stuart Pearce will make a decision on the best squad available given where he is in respect of now having assessed the players that are not involved in the Euros and the current state of injuries.
'He will then make the best call he can - on merit. I am not putting any pressure of him whatsoever to pick anyone. We discussed the whole topic of selecting over-23 players back more than a year ago but I haven't subsequently.

'We have been very clear from the outset, it's absolutely Stuart's choice and he is totally free to make the selection of the team he believes will put in the best performance. It's as simple as that.'
As a global superstar Beckham would have been a big pull for fans to come and watch Team GB at the games and get excited about the Olympic football - which is not normally a major pull.
Beckham is still expected to come to the Games in some aspect and may have a role to play at the opening ceremony.
Beckham could point out that he would have at least been match-fit while all the other players would be entering the tournament after the summer break.
Present and correct: Beckham has flown over the world to help the bid

Giggs and Bellamy were widely expected to be included but the call-up of Richards is also as much of a surprise as the Manchester City defender being left out of England's Euro 2012 squad - after which he refused to go on standby for the European Championship.
Other under-23 players who are almost certain to be confirmed by Pearce include Arsenal's Aaron Ramsey and Tottenham's Gareth Bale.
Manchester United had told the FA in May that they did not want any of their over-age players apart from Welsh winger Giggs to be considered for selection.
The club ruled out Pearce picking Rio Ferdinand, Paul Scholes and Jonny Evans for the Olympic tournament.
It means United players Tom Cleverley and Chris Smalling, who both missed Euro 2012 through injury, may be part of the Olympic squad

Google Glasses showcased with skydiving extravaganza

Today at Google IO 2012, Sergey Brin, cofounder of Google, took the stage at the annual developers conference to demonstrate the much-talked-about Google Glasses or Project Glass.
His presentation opened with a fellow Googler wearing the Google Glasses, while signed into a Google + hangout, and then sky diving out of a plane.
Not only did the device stay on his face, but this extreme Googler was able to capture the entire sky dive to the top of the Moscone center with the Google Glasses without service interruption or errors.

This was followed by a quick transition over to a few bikers doing acrobatic tricks and jumps, also while wearing the glasses.
So it seems Google Glasses not only offers an augmented reality experience, but also lets more active users know how fast they're going on a bike, play tennis, walk around on a beach, as well as jump out of a plane.

Google Glasses lighter than sunglasses

The rest of Brin's presentation was not as eventful, but he and his fellow Project Glass developers did explain that in order for these to be useful, they had to be "lighter than sunglasses."
However, consumers will have to wait to try Google Glasses. They're not available to the general public yet.
Brin announced at the conference that only eligible IO attendees will receive a Google Glass explorer addition, which is not for consumers. And, they're only accepting orders at the conference.

Mozilla have released a new version of Firefox for the Android platform, which brings a huge amount of new updates. Infact, it's the most innovative and improved version of the browser since it first launched on the Android platform.

Speed is one of biggest areas of improvement with both the applications start-up and the overall browsing speeds vastly improved. Web-browsing is up to three times faster than the previous version of the browser and double the speed of Google's Chrome browser.

The Flash support has also been improved with the addition of "Tap To Play". The new feature won't display any flash content until you click on an icon,  which increases browsing speeds and reduces data usage.

The new version of Firefox is also more secure than previous versions thanks to the inclusion of master password support and new HTTP transport security. A new "Do Not Track" mode also protects a users privacy by not tracking their browsing.

The new version of Mozilla Firefox for Android can be downloaded free from Google Play by clicking here.

Government postpones planned 3p fuel duty increase

The government has announced it will postpone its 3p-a-litre rise in fuel duty in August until January next year.
The move follows a campaign by road users' groups, who argued the increase would damage the economy.
Fuel duty will be frozen for the rest of the year, Chancellor George Osborne told MPs, adding that this would benefit families and businesses.
Labour, the SNP, Plaid Cymru and MPs from other parties had threatened to force a Commons vote on the issue.
The Sun newspaper and several Conservative MPs have also been pushing for a change of heart, amid concerns that prices at the pumps are squeezing living standards.
Announcing the postponement of the duty rise, Mr Osborne said: "We are on the side of working families and businesses and this will fuel our recovery at this very difficult economic time for the world."
'Difficult decisions'
The government was "doing everything we can", he told the Commons, adding: "The one-off cost of this change will be fully paid for by the larger-than-forecast savings in departmental budgets."
In last year's Autumn Statement Mr Osborne cancelled a scheduled 3p rise in fuel duty for January this year but said another planned rise this August would proceed - although it would be cut from 5p to 3p.

Labour has called for the increase to be delayed until next January, saying the cost - between £500m and £600m - could be covered by the underspend on the Olympics budget or by closing tax loopholes and reversing changes to tax allowances for pension contributions for those earning more than £150,000.
In the Commons, Mr Balls told the Commons that Mr Osborne was a "part-time, U-turning chancellor" who would "not assume responsibility for his own decisions".
But Mr Osborne said road users would be paying 10p a litre more in taxation had Labour still been in power.
SNP Treasury spokesperson Stewart Hosie MP said: "This is a great result... the chancellor's cave-in comes on the day that our Budget clause, supported by 54 MPs from across nine parties, was due to be tabled ahead of the Finance debates next week."
Plaid Cymru's Westminster leader, Elfyn Llywd, said: "This latest in a string of government U-turns will offer people some relief as they struggle to make ends meet - at least until the end of the year as the chancellor has noted...
"Plaid Cymru alongside the SNP have been calling for a genuine fuel duty stabiliser for nearly a decade and that is yet to be achieved, but at least this further damage has been avoided."
'Sigh of relief'
RAC Foundation director Professor Stephen Glaister said: "This is good news for drivers and good news for the country. Given that tax makes up around 60% of the pump price, falls in the price of oil were only ever going to go so far in easing the financial burden on motorists."
Quentin Wilson, national spokesman for FairFuelUK, said: "This is democracy at its very best where a government and a chancellor can review decisions, and act with fairness and common sense. Businesses and hard-working families across this country will breathe a grateful sigh of relief, at least for the rest of this year."
Last week Prime Minister David Cameron said the planned duty rise would be "looked at", but held out little hope for a delay, saying: "I think people sitting at home know that the government doesn't have a bottomless pit of money."
The cancellation of the duty rise comes after Bank of England governor Sir Mervyn King said he was "pessimistic" about the short-term prospects for the global economy.
He told the Commons Treasury Committee there was "enormous uncertainty" and that he had "no idea" what the outcome of the eurozone crisis was going to be.
Official data shows the government borrowed £17.9bn in May, more than most experts had predicted.

Microsoft Office to get social after $1.2bn Yammer buy

Microsoft has bought the enterprise social network Yammer in a bid to boost the software giant's cloud portfolio.

The $1.2 billion (£769 million) cash deal was announced on Monday, confirming rumours of the imminent acquisition. Yammer will continue to run as a standalone service, both it and Microsoft said, but Microsoft will push its adoption as part of a range of cloud services that also include Office 365, SharePoint and Skype.

"As a Yammer customer, you will continue to get a secure, private social network — delivered with the same focus on simplicity, innovation, and cross-platform experiences," Yammer chief David Sacks, who will continue to head up the company as part of Microsoft's Office division, said in a blog post. "Over time, you'll see more and more connections to SharePoint, Office365, Dynamics and Skype."

Yammer gives Microsoft a rival to Salesforce.com's Chatter, also a social networking tool of sorts. Indeed, Microsoft has previously experimented with this sort of thing, notably with its OfficeTalk trial a couple of years ago.

However, according to a report in The Seattle Times, Microsoft chief Steve Ballmer is particularly keen on the 'grassroots' nature of Yammer's adoption.

"Consumerisation of IT is a trend which I think perhaps more than almost any other company out there, Yammer has gotten right with its viral adoption model," Ballmer was quoted as saying on a conference call. "Yammer now has a sales model that we like: viral adoption by the end user, the consumer inside some kind of professional organisation, with the option for IT to buy enterprise-level capability and management."

Yammer has itself been acquisitive in the recent past — in April it picked up the UK firm oneDrum so as to add file-sharing capabilities to its product.

Olympics not an easy target - MI5

In an assessment of the security threat facing the UK, MI5 Director-General Jonathan Evans predicts a successful and memorable London Olympics but expresses growing concern about Iran.
In an assessment of the security threat facing the UK, MI5 director-General Jonathan Evans predicts a successful and memorable London Olympics but expresses growing concern about Iran.
The head of MI5 says the Olympics Games is not an easy target for terrorists, writes Channel 4 News Home Affairs Correspondent Simon Israel.
Jonathan Evans told an invited audience in the City last night that while there's no such thing as guaranteed security he predicted a successful and memorable games.
The director general used his first public speech in nearly two years to deliver an updated broad assessment of the terror threat to the UK and its citizens.
But again there are no numbers - no quantifying of the threat, no details on the plethora of networks plotting some attack or other.
The Olympic Games, he says, have dominated much of the thinking but added: "..the Games are not an easy target, and the fact that we have disrupted multiple terrorst plots here and abroad in recent years demonstrates that the UK as a whole is not an easy target."
'Threat intelligence'
Inside venues are considered the most diffcult given the security arrangements, but an attack anywhere would be seen as an attack on the Olympics.
The security services have been planning for the worst, another 7/7 or a Mumbai-style attack - even another 9/11 (hence the proposal to place surface-to-air missiles on top of tower blocks).

They haven't stopped trying, but we have got better at stopping them. Jonathan Evans

But that is not what they are currently predicting. There are suggestions there's been a significant increase in "threat intelligence" but little of it amounts to credible plots.
In Monday night's speech the head of MI5 said "in back rooms and in cars on the streets of this country there is no shortage of individuals talking about wanting to mount terrorist attacks here".
The security think-tank Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) has indentified 43 potential plots or serious incidents since 9/11.
MI5's assessment is there's been 11 credible terror plots is that since then, which amounts to one a year.
Mr Evans said disruption and supression is leading to a form of stalemate - "They haven't stopped trying, but we have got better at stopping them."
Concern about Iran
Channel 4 News understands that close to 600,000 people will have gone through accreditation process by the time the games get underway and out of that only a a tiny number have come up on MI5's radar.
Security sources refused to say if some of the "hits" were individuals assigned to visiting international teams.

A return to state-sponsored terrorism by Iran or its associates, such as Hezbollah, cannot be ruled out. Jonathan Evans

The head of MI5 also expressed growing concern about Iran.
It's been revealed that MI5 has in the last year has significantly reinforced a dedicated unit, fearing that crunchtime may arrive next year over Iran's nuclear intentions. and the UK is widely seen as a potential target given recent attempted terrorists plots against Israeli interests.
He warned: "A return to state-sponsored terrorism by Iran or its associates, such as Hezbollah, cannot be ruled out as pressure on the Iranian leadership increases."
He also described the extent of cyber espionage and cyber crime as astonishing - on an industrial scale, and MI5 was currently investigating attacks on more than a dozen companies.
One un-named example he gave was a major London listed company which lost £800m, not just through intellectual property loss but also from commercial disadvantage in contractual negotiations.

Google Asus Nexus 7 images, specs leak

Days ahead of the expected announcement of the jointly produced Google/Asus Nexus 7 tablet, an official render and spec sheet has been surfaced by Gizmodo Australia.
The leak confirms that the device will indeed be a 7in tablet running Android Jelly Bean. A recent listing in the Google Play Store suggests that Jelly Bean will be an update to version 4.1, not 5.0 as previously expected.
The Nexus 7 will be powered by a 1.3GHz quad-core Tegra 3 processor, GeForce 12-core GPU and 1GB RAM. It will ship with two storage options - 8GB and 16GB.
The tablet will feature an IPS display, with a viewing angle of 178 degrees and a resolution of a 1,280 x 800 pixels. The spec sheet reveals the Nexus 7 will feature a 1.2-megapixel front-facing camera, and the images of the device suggest it will not have a rear facing camera.
Pricing in US Dollars appears to match the rumoured range, with the 8GB version set to cost $199 (£130) and the 16GB at $249 (£160). The device will reportedly hit retail outlets in July.
Neither Google nor Asus have confirmed the leak, though more details are sure to emerge at the upcoming Google I/O developers' conference on 27 - 29 June.

Rihanna proved she's the epitome of hardcore as she went out partying straight after her headline gig at Radio 1's Hackney Weekend - and she didn't bother changing outfits.

The We Found Love singer was spotted at London's Whisky Mist club fresh from her headline performance at the Hackney festival on Sunday.
She wowed crowds with a stream of her best loved hits while wearing a skimpy outfit that no doubt left her feeling the chill on stage.

But it was clear after her act was over, Riri was keen to enjoy the nightlife London has to offer.
And while many stars wouldn't be seen dead in the same outfit they had just performed in, Rihanna was clearly a fan of her daring get-up as she decided to wear it to the club.

The 24-year-old singer had been on stage in a leopard-print T-shirt, fishnet hot pants and trainers, which she set off with lashings of red lipstick.
And when she emerged from the club, which is a favourite among celebrities and footballers, after a few hours of partying, she still seemed happy to be in her stage outfit.
